A Tuscola County man accused in a fatal shooting will undergo a mental competency evaluation before his case moves forward.
62 year old David Lezek faces 11 criminal charges in connection with the death of 65 year old Stanley Schmidt. The charges stem from a shooting reported March 12th at a home on Willits Road in Watertown Township.
Court records indicate Lezek has been ordered to the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti for an evaluation to determine if he is able to participate in legal proceedings. The case is expected to be on hold until the assessment is complete.
A hearing is scheduled for July, when a district court judge will review the findings and decide next steps.
Lezek's charges include firing a weapon into a building causing death, multiple firearm possession counts for a prohibited person, ammunition possession, and several felony firearm violations. If convicted on the most serious charge, he could face a life sentence.
Investigators say Schmidt was found dead at the scene with gunshot wounds, and Lezek was taken into custody at that time. Authorities have not released details about what led up to the shooting, and say the investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges.
