Huron County District Court - Judge Ferris accepted a no-contest plea from John Joseph Karas in a retail fraud case. Karas was charged with third-degree retail fraud after being caught concealing hardware items worth $28.36 at a Walmart in Bad Axe, Michigan, on March 3, 2026. Loss prevention staff intercepted Harris after he passed all points of sale, and police later recovered the stolen items.
The report stated that Karas picked up hardware items and put them in his jacket and proceeded to leave the store. Asset management stopped him and recovered some items, but he said he had to get back to work and proceeded to leave. The asset management personnel believed he had more items on him. Bad Axe police were called and they intercepted Karas in the Amazon warehouse parking lot, and recovered the remaining stolen items.
Harris, who has a prior criminal record including larceny, property destruction, and controlled substance offenses, is currently on probation.
The court sentenced him to 6 months of probation under supervision, with conditions including monthly reporting, restrictions on travel, and immediate notification of changes in address or employment. He was also ordered to pay $515 in fines and fees by October 15, 2026. No restitution was required as all items were recovered.
