Bad Axe, Michigan - Chief Shawn Webber says that the Bad Axe Police are stepping up traffic enforcement efforts this spring, with a recent operation highlighting a sharp focus on distracted driving.
On April 28th, officers with the Bad Axe Police Department carried out a targeted enforcement detail lasting about 5 hours. During that time, 41 traffic stops were made, resulting in 41 citations.
Most of those tickets - 31 in total - were issued for violations of Michigan's hands-free driving law. Officers also cited 8 drivers for speeding, including 7 in a posted school zone near Bad Axe Middle School. Additional violations included 1 expired plate and 1 seatbelt infraction.
Police say the initiative concentrated on key corridors, including West Huron Avenue and North Port Crescent Street, as well as school zone enforcement along South Van Dyke Road.
Department officials emphasize that these enforcement efforts will continue at various times throughout the year, especially as warmer weather brings increased traffic and pedestrian activity.
Authorities are reminding drivers to stay focused behind the wheel, use hands-free technology if necessary, and remain alert in school zones where reduced speeds are in place to protect children.
Officials also note that these operations are driven by community safety concerns - not quotas - and are aimed at reducing distracted driving incidents across the city.
