Governor Gretchen Whitmer has expanded Michigan's state of emergency to include Tuscola County, as severe flooding continues to impact communities across the region.
Local officials in Tuscola County report extensive damage to roads, bridges, and drainage systems after days of heavy rain and rising water levels. At least one roadway has been shut down indefinitely due to structural damage, and emergency crews say some areas remain difficult to access.
State leaders warn that ongoing flooding is creating safety concerns for residents, including the risk of injury and possible displacement, as water levels remain high and infrastructure repairs are still underway.
The emergency declaration now covers more than 40 counties statewide, following weeks of severe weather that has included flooding, strong winds, and tornado activity.
Outside the Thumb, the village of Holly is also part of the expanded emergency zone. Officials there are dealing with major flooding at a wastewater treatment facility after repeated storms, leading to significant repair needs.
The declaration allows the state to deploy additional resources and opens the door for financial assistance to help local governments recover and rebuild.
Emergency crews across Michigan continue working around the clock as conditions evolve.
