In Lansing, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says her office will step in to challenge a new electric rate increase request from DTE Energy.
The utility has filed with the Michigan Public Service Commission seeking approval to raise rates by about 474 million dollars annually. That would mean roughly a 9.7 percent increase for residential customers. The request comes just weeks after regulators approved a separate 242 million dollar hike.
Nessel says her office will review the filing closely, citing concerns about costs and the impact on Michigan households. She has previously criticized utility rate increases and says regulators should prioritize affordability and transparency for customers.
The dispute also comes amid broader questions over DTE's plans tied to future data center developments, including a proposed project in Saline Township. Nessel has indicated her office is pursuing legal action to gain access to related contracts, arguing they should be subject to public review.
DTE provides electricity to about 2.3 million customers in southeast Michigan and natural gas service to more than 1.3 million statewide.
State regulators are now expected to review the rate request in the months ahead.
