Laker Schools Honored as a Capturing Kids Hearts District

Once again the Laker School District was honored as the "Capturing Kids Hearts National Showcase District" for the third year in a row.
"This year's recognition is a clean sweep, with every building in our district, including the Sail Academy behind honored as a National Showcase School." said Superintendent Jill VerBurg, noting such an achievement reflects the district's deep commitment to ensuring every Laker feels safe, seen, and supported.
Capturing Kids Hearts recognizes K-12 campuses nationwide that demonstrate exceptional, relationship-driven cultures, improved attendance, and high student/teacher connectedness, according to the organization's website.
In other district matters, the board of education accepted the retirement of elementary teacher Michelle Fritz who will retire at the end of the 2025-2026 after 26 years of service.
During the meeting, it was announced the district's open house and teacher work day and the professional development day to Aug. 17 due to a conflict.
