Hemlock Public School District is marking National Reading Month in March with a series of activities designed to strengthen literacy skills and encourage community participation.
Students across the district will take part in themed reading events, classroom visits from guest readers, and special literacy programs aimed at fostering a lifelong interest in books. Several community leaders and public officials are scheduled to read with students, including Matthew Bierlein, Kevin Daley, Lindsay Kerry, and Amos O'Neal.
District administrators will also visit elementary classrooms as part of the initiative, temporarily closing the central office to demonstrate the importance of leadership in promoting literacy.
Superintendent Don Killingbeck said reading plays a critical role in students' long-term success, noting that early literacy helps build confidence, curiosity, and academic growth. Board President Matt Wesener added that strong reading skills form the foundation for critical thinking and civic engagement.
Director of Curriculum and Instruction Lindy Beckman emphasized the importance of family involvement, citing research that links regular reading at home to improved vocabulary, comprehension, and performance across subject areas.
District leaders highlighted studies showing that early reading proficiency increases graduation rates, strengthens brain development, and supports long-term economic stability.
Community members are encouraged to participate by volunteering as guest readers and reading with children at home. Those interested can contact Hemlock Elementary at 989-642-5283 or K.C. Ling Elementary at 989-642-5288 for more information.
Officials say the district's Reading Month efforts reflect a broader commitment to literacy as a core value, reinforcing the belief that strong reading skills help prepare students for future leadership and success.
