Mid-Michigan just experienced its third-coldest start to December on record, according to the National Weather Service.
Flint recorded an average temperature of 18.6 degrees during the first half of the month, trailing only 1958 and 1976 for coldest early Decembers. The city also tied a December 14th record low of zero degrees.
A polar vortex pushed arctic air into the region, creating frigid conditions and adding to already above-normal snowfall. Flint has measured 13.9 inches of snow so far this season - about five inches above average - while Saginaw has received 18.3 inches, nearly double its usual amount by mid-December.
Forecasters say a warm-up is underway, with highs reaching the 40's and rain expected later this week.
The milder weather could melt part of the region's snowpack and reduce the chances of a white Christmas.
