Michigan Remembers September 11th

To honor the tragic events from 25 years ago, all border crossings in Michigan will close at 8:46 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, for 30 minutes or less in commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, the Blue Water Bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Windsor Tunnel, and the Ambassador Bridge will each close.
Hundreds of stories have been told about that day, but there was one response that didn't receive much notice.
On the day of the attack, more than 500,000 people were trapped in lower Manhattan with the bridges and the tunnels closed.
The Coast Guard sent a plea for help. There were about 150 tugboats, ferries as well as fishing boats that responded.
In about nine hours, the civilian armada saved half a million people, making it the largest sea rescue in world history.
There was also a coordinated attack on the Pentagon when a hijacked jet crashed into it.
The 59 passengers in that jet and 125 people in the Pentagon who were killed included Randy Wood, who was originally a Thumb local from Owendale.
There is a memorial bench in Owendale Park to honor Wood.
During the attack, passengers and crew aboard another jet fought back causing the jet that was headed for another attack to crash in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Because of those attacks, on December 18, 2001, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution designating September 11 as Patriot Day.
