Funeral Mass for Dick will be Monday, December 18, 2023 at 11:30 am, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, of the Holy Name of Mary Parish, with Fr. Kevin Wojciechowski officiating. Burial will follow in the OLLH Church Cemetery. Visitation for Dick will be on Sunday, from 2-8pm at the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach. Visitation on Monday will be at the church beginning at 10 am until time of services at 11:30 am. Memorials may be given to the Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic School. Dick is survived by his wife Barbra, children: Michael (Annette) Gorney of St. Charles, IL, Lucinda Brown of Toledo, OH, Gary Gorney of Aurora, IL., 8 grandchildren, Jessica (Robert) Rivera of St. Charles, IL, Mark (Lisa) Gorney of Elburn, IL, Amanda Rapponotti of Killeen, TX, Crystal Tetik of Colorado Springs, CO, Matthew Tetik of Boise, ID, Olivia, Cecilia and Joseph Brown of Toledo, OH, 7 great grandchildren: Jacob and Evan Rivera, Kaitlyn and Azreal Rapponotti, and Gavin, Layla and Lucy Gorney. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Gorney, and sister Linda Gorney, and his parents Joe and Josephine Gorney.

Biography

Richard G. Gorney, age 85 of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on October 20, 1938 in Harbor Beach to the late Joseph and Josephine (Kranz) Gorney. He and Barbra Miller were united in marriage on June 10, 1961 in Parisville. Dick graduated from Our Lady of Lake Huron School in 1956. He was a retired employee of the Harbor Beach Post Office, retiring in 1995. Dick was an avid sports fan, and religiously followed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Boston Red Sox. Dick played in a semi-pro baseball league in Canada for the Listowel Legionaries and Hensell, Ontario. Later, he played in the Huron County Baseball League for Harbor Beach, Ubly and Port Austin. In 1957, he had the opportunity to play with the Port Huron All Stars in a game at Briggs Stadium (Later Tiger Stadium). He began a coaching career in the fall of 1957 as a Junior High Basketball Coach at OLLH Catholic School in Harbor Beach. Then he became involved with student sports in baseball, softball basketball, and Football (OLLH Only) in Port Hope and Harbor Beach plus he was a referee and umpire for 25 years. Some highlights of his coaching career include: 5 Championship Lions Little League teams, OLLH Baseball team tied for high school championship in 1963, the Port Hope Girls won the District Basketball championship in 1994, and in 2008 the Harbor Beach High School Softball team won the Districts, for the first time in the school's softball history by defeating Ubly 8-0. Dick also coached Country Schools Basketball, and summer softball, before retiring from coaching in 2015, making it 57 years devoted to student sports. Dick was presented with a Coaching Award during the last home league basketball game for the OLLH Trojans, on February 21, 1970. In 2010, Dick was presented with the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Harbor Beach, for his years of devotion to student sports. Dick was a collector of stamps. In the spring of 1965, he expanded that hobby into a business venture with his wife, Barbra, titled B & R Stamps. The first show attended was in Saginaw, but expanded into many other shows in the Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, and Minneapolis areas, attending about 20 shows per year. The inventory included stamps from around the world plus new issues and topical stamps like marine life, sports, art, notable people honored on stamps, lunar new year among others. He was also a dealer in stamp supplies including lindner albums. He sold the business in 2004.
