Biography

Vernita Joyce Nimtz passed away on December 23rd 2022 at age 91. She was born on August 9th 1931, in Elkton, Michigan to Johnnie and Eva Thomas. She went on to graduate from Elkton High School in 1950. Vernita was cherished by many, especially her seven children and 18 grandchildren. Likewise, she was very dedicated to those she loved! With big, brown, melty eyes, a strong will, and loving heart, she was a force to be reckoned with. Vernita spent many years working as a waitress at Colonial House, as a nurse’s aide and caretaker. On January 31st 1953 she married Walter Nimtz- and would have been married for 70 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the strongest advocate for her children and often thought they could do no wrong. Vernita encouraged her children to pursue education and was proud to be the mom of 7 college graduates. Even learning to drive a car again after age 50, she is an inspiration. A woman of tradition, she consistently made home cooked meals, fresh pies, and bread. Her grandchildren have fond memories of visits to her farm house and frequent pampering. These included root beer floats, cappuccinos with whipped cream, homemade play-doh, playing board games and picking fresh produce in her garden. To be loved by Vernita was to feel safe and protected, even going so far as to sleep in her scared grandchild’s bed. She always had a story, a pop, and a piece of pie to share! We will surely miss her!
