She was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Woodhull and Helen LeDuc, and three brothers, Floyd, Arthur, and L. Jack Carr.

Biography

Florence E. Kerr Hoffman, 93 of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Country Gardens in Pigeon. Born in Bad Axe on March 10, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Ann (Stenton) Carr, and graduated in 1937 from Bad Axe High School. On April 26, 1946 she was married to Lawrence E. Kerr in Lapeer; he preceded her in death on July 13, 1980. She was married to Neilan Hoffman on May 9, 1987 and he preceded her in death on January 28, 1988. Florence retired in 1982 from Thumb National Bank & Trust as Assistant Cashier, after working there 20 years. She was a former member and officer of the Pigeon Worthwhile Club. She enjoyed playing piano and organ, singing, embroidery, cross-stitch, and sewing. She also enjoyed traveling, and especially showering her grandchildren with love. Florence was a member of the Pigeon First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and was an officer of the Port Huron District United Methodist Women.

Edwin Sams, age 81 of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at his home. He was born on December 19, 1931 in Meade Township, son of the late Lawrence and Martha (Bredow) Sams. He married Shirley Jean Kinney on August 1, 1953. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2004. He married Ann Tovey-Anson on February 12, 2005. Ed was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Bad Axe for 29 years. He was an avid camper, a coach for the Bad Axe Little League, and was active in Boy Scouts of America, serving as district commissioner.

Dale F. Farver, age 78 of Filion, passed away on Monday, October 7,2013 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on October 12, 1934 in ELkton, the son of the late Earl & Gertrude (Perry) Farver. He married Johaznna Schoen on September 12, 1964 in Our Savior Lutheran Church of Bad Axe. Dale retired from former Carmet Corporation in Bad Axe. He enjoyed woodworking and deer hunting and Pheasant hunting with his son and grandsons, and bear hunting in the U.P. He also enjoyed spending time at his cabin in East Tawas with his family, which he built along with family and friends.

Mr. John P. Kowalski, 97 of Minden City, passed away, Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on August 1, 1916 in Minden City to the late Walter and Sophia (Kulish) Kowalski. He married Eleanor Currey on July 9, 1942 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on September 5, 2006. John attended the Minden City School. He worked for Packard Motor for a few years and then managed the West End Hotel of Minden City. John then became owner of Kowalski Minden City Supermarket. He was Grand Marshall for the 1997 Minden City Homecoming parade. John organized and was General Chairman of the Minden City parade from 1950-1980. He was a lifetime member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council #3823. He was the last living charter member of the Minden City Lions Club in which he held all offices, including past president. John and his wife sponsored and bowled on different teams in Minden City for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Christopher P. Babisch, age 24, of Hume Twp. near oak Beach died Sunday morning at his home in his sleep from ongoing health problems. He was born November 1, 1988, in Pigeon to Ronald and Nancy (Mosey) Babisch and grew up in the Owendale area. Chris was a 2007 graduate of Laker High School. Chris started working at a Roundtree Dairy Farm while in high school, staying with them for five years. He then worked at Zimba Organic Farm for a year before taking a position at Blue Diamond, where he was currently employed. Chris was a member of the Rivers Edge Community Church, Caseville and enjoyed fishing and considered himself a bit of a picker, having fun gathering scrap for a little profit. His favorite passed time was spending time with his son, Elii.

She was born July 1, 1916 in Sherman Township to the late Joseph and Mary (Hitch) Guitar. Cecilia was united in marriage to Robert Stacer on November 28, 1933 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth, MI. He preceded her in death on February 3, 1993. She raised her family and farmed with her husband until retiring and moving to Bad Axe in 1978. They spent the next 20 winters in Bradenton, FL. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe. She was a great cook and loved taking care of her lawn and flowers. She enjoyed dancing the Oberek, square dancing and playing cards.

Steven Wrubel of Mt. Morris, formerly of Holiday, Florida and St. Helen, Michigan, age 104, died Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Angelica's Place in Romeo. Steve was born July 2, 1909, in Huron County, Michigan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Domazy and Cecilia (Borowicz) Wrubel. He and Victoria Virginia Puvalowski were united in marriage September 28, 1929, in Ubly, Michigan. Steve and Vickie were the longest married couple in the United States, when she preceded him in death on April 8, 2013, after 83 years of marriage. Steve worked for General Motors in Flint, for 38 years until his retirement. He was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Council #4285, as well as several Polish Clubs in Florida. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and could fix almost anything.

Biography

Pauline Beatrice (Geiger) Eichler, 86, of Pigeon, MI, died Saturday afternoon, September 28, 2013, from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease while under hospice care at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care in Pigeon, MI. She was born on June 8, 1927 in Elkton, MI, the eldest child of Edward and Ortha (Melick) Geiger. A lifelong resident of the Michigan’s Western Thumb area, Pauline and her eight siblings grew up on the family farm south of Pigeon. At age 16, she graduated from Pigeon High School in 1943 and went to work as a switchboard operator for Pigeon Telephone Company which was owned by the Spence brothers at the time. On June 22, 1946, Pauline married John E. Eichler in Pigeon. Together the couple farmed John’s family’s home place where they raised their five children. In 1974, the couple moved into Pigeon where they lived together until John’s death on August 2, 1988. In 1972, the Eichler’s business interests expanded with the purchase of Pigeon Telephone Company. In 1981, Pauline returned to the phone company office handling payroll, receivables and other financial business for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Board of Directors helping lead in the creation of Agri-Valley Communications, Inc., the parent company to Pigeon Telephone, Thumb Cellular, Agri-Valley Services/AVCI.net and Agri-Valley Broadband/miSpot. She continued to work at the corporate office daily until 2007, when her health forced the reduction in her workload. She remained on the Agri-Valley Communications Board of Directors until 2010. Pauline was a graduate of Central Michigan University and, prior to her involvement with the communications industry, taught at Laker Schools for several years. She and John were both very active in the Pigeon community and believed in supporting rural living. She served on the Pigeon District Library Board, was a member of the Pigeon United Federated Women’s Club and a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church where she served as church organist for many years. In her spare time, Pauline enjoyed quilting and created over 30 full-size quilts during her lifetime as well as traveling extensively with trips to Ireland, Singapore, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Edith M. Allen 84 of Bay City, MI formerly of Pigeon, MI died Friday afternoon, September 27, at McLaren Bay Region, Bay City, MI. She was born October 26, 1928 in Pontiac, MI to the late Grant and Jane Capling. Edith moved from Williamston, near Lansing,MI to Huron County in 1964, where they had been vacationing many years prior. She was a beautician and had worked at the Huron County Medical Care Facility 22 years in Bad Axe, MI retiring in 1990. She was doing hair at Bea’s Beauty Shop in the town of Elkton, MI at the same time. In her spare time, Edith enjoyed reading, drawing, baking and making candy, especially fudge.

Robert S. Vargo, Jr., 86, of Cass City, died following a short illness Friday, September 27, 2013. He was born June 30, 1927 in Taplin, WV to Robert and Mary Anne (Orban) Vargo, Sr. He married Joyce Ann Donnelly May 7, 1960 in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Junior completed the eighth grade at Remington Country School. He served in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper. After his time in the military, he worked as a farmer and mechanic. Junior was a very talented mechanic. He restored many antique tractors over the years and he built and raced stock cars for the dirt track. Junior enjoyed hunting and fishing especially for rainbow trout. At one time he was a member of the Cass City Gun Glub. He was an avid reader especially enjoying Westerns. Junior was an extremely generous person and would do anything for anybody often giving up his personal time to help someone with a problem.

Martha Sue (Beaver) (Bensinger) Arnott, age 65, resident of Owendale, formerly of Mattawan, Michigan passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the McLaren Bay Special Care Hospital, Bay City. She was born April 27, 1948 in Bad Axe to the late Norman Beaver and Dorothy (Pace) (Beaver) Depcinski. Martha was employed by Engineer Plastic Components in Mattawan for over 20 years. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and going to casinos.

Biography

Joan K. Sageman passed away on Thursday evening, September 26, at McLaren Bay Region after a short illness. She was born July 8, 1931 in Owendale to the late John C. and Jessie (Reece) Ross. She graduated in 1949 Co-Valedictorian with her childhood friend, cousin and soon to be sister in law, Donna Ziehm Sageman. Joan grew up in a talented musical family and continued her love of music throughout her life. On October 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to Clarence J. Sageman. Together they owned and operated Sageman’s Jewelry for over 40 years, where she was responsible for selecting all of the unique and lovely giftware items that were sold in the store. After their retirement, she obtained her real estate license and was employed by Osentoski Realty for several years. She was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe and several local choral groups. She enjoyed being out on the water, boating on Lake Huron and fishing in Canada with their special circle of friends. Joan had a very positive outlook on life and always had smile for everyone especially her grandchildren.

Marc is survived by his wife Betty Lou Schumacher of Harbor Beach and their children: Chris Schumacher and his wife Arla of Cadillac; Amy Trost and her husband Tom of Warren; Tad Schumacher and his wife Dawn of Harbor Beach; and Beth Schumacher and her friend Chris Schott of Deckerville. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Chad and Kristyn Schumacher, Nicole Trost and Jakob Schumacher; three great grandchildren: Payton, Alex and Kahl. Surviving also is a brother Lee Schumacher and his wife Edna of Grand Blanc and a sister Eleanor Platte of Harbor Beach. Marc was preceded in death by a brother James and two sisters, Rosemary Donovan and Louise Schumacher.

Biography

Marcus L. Schumacher age 91 of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 in Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born on Feb. 27, 1922 in Harbor Beach, he was the son of the late John and Josephine (Kramer) Schumacher. On January 6, 1951 Marcus and Betty Lou Tageson were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. Marc was a retired Sand Beach Township farmer of 50 years, a Dekalb Seed Dealer, and a substitute mail carrier from 1945 to 1975. Marc was very involved in the local community and served in many roles including: Charter member of the Harbor Beach Jaycees where he served as Treasurer, former President and Treasurer of the Harbor Beach Conservation Club; former member and President of the Harbor Beach Lion’s Club, past Rotary Club member, former Harbor Beach Credit Union Secretary and Treasurer, and life member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club. Marc served Huron County in many different capacities as Sand Beach Township Clerk from 1951–1967, Sand Beach Township Supervisor from 1968-1975, Huron County Equalization employee 1975-1978 and Huron County Commissioner 1978-1982 where he served as Chairman. Marc loved bowling, square and round dancing.

Genevieve Bell Bowers, age 76, of Huron Township, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Huron Medical Center. She was born April 18, 1937 in Rochester, Michigan to the late William and Gertrude (Smith) Lane. Genevieve and Robert W. Bowers were united in marriage on May 7, 1955. He preceded her in death on July 14, 1997. She graduated from Port Hope High School, Class of 1955. Genevieve was a lifelong member of the Filion Nazarene Church and very active in her church community. She served as church treasurer and loved to hold the babies in church. Genevieve was also known for her baked goods and cooking. She looked forward to spending time with her dog Tiny.

Norma l. Collon age 90 of Bad Axe, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, September 25 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born on April 21, 1923 in Bad Axe, the daughter of the late Albert and Ann (Nelson) Hass. She married William T. Collon on April 6, 1946 in St. Paul Episcopal Church of Bad Axe. He preceded her in death in February of 1974. Norma was a member of the Bad Axe High School Class of 1941 and the Alma College Class of 1945. She taught school at Elkton Elementary and George E. Green Elementary School for 23 years.

Judith Faye “Judy” Gaeth, 69 of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Born in Pigeon on December 26, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Vern and Irene M. (Haist) Thick and was a graduate of Laker High School. She married John “Jack” Gaeth in Pigeon. Judy loved working as a courier as well as numerous other jobs at the Co-op Elevator in Pigeon and enjoyed all the dear friends she had there. Family was special to her, and she was so proud of her son and daughter-in-law as well as her grandchildren, Cole, Charlie, and Owen. Cole and Judy were big fans of the Detroit Tigers. She would cut out newspaper articles about Cabrera and Verlander and send them to him. She loved spending time babysitting for Charlie and Owen. Judy liked going to the farm where she enjoyed watching the crop harvests-especially the beet harvest. She also loved going to the cottage and sitting by the water which was so peaceful to her. Judy loved making animal sugar cookies for her family and friends, and always decorated them for each holiday occasion. At family get-togethers, Judy always took something special, such as strawberry dessert, chocolate dump cake or stuffed mushrooms. Judy also enjoyed canning pickles. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon.

William J. Shaw Jr.,77 of Pigeon, passed away Thursday, September 25, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. He was born in Ypsilanti on July 7, 1936 to the late William and Helen “Bunny” (Hutchinson) Shaw. After high school, Bill served two terms in the United States Army. Bill worked as a plumber several years down state before moving to the Thumb in the early seventies. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Caseville. Bill was a great help and friend to many people; his wit and humor will be greatly missed. The family would like to express their gratitude to Bill’s special friends, Jane Rosenall, Bill Bollinger, Linda Yantis, Al Collison, and many more. Their time, assistance, and friendship went above and beyond. We can never thank them enough.

She was born on May 2, 1921 in Bad Axe, daughter of George and Mabel (Rapson) Murdock. She married Erwin Williams on April 5, 1941 in the former Colfax United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2001. Wilma was employed for several years at Dibble’s 5 &10 in Bad Axe. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, ad being active in a variety in a variety of groups at the Bad Axe First United Methodist Church.

Thomas E. “Moose” Holmes, age 71 of Hume Twp. near Oak Beach died Monday evening, September 23, at Scheurer Hospital following a massive heart attack. He was born June 7, 1942, in Detroit to the late Lawrence and Leona (Boike) Holmes and grew up in the St. Clair Shores area. He attended Lakeview High School of St. Clair Shores and graduated in 1960. On August 4, 1962, he was united in marriage to Patricia F. Sill at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, St. Clair Shores. They lived in Roseville for several years, then in 1966 they moved to Gross Pointe Woods. In 1996, they moved to their cottage in Hume Twp. Moose was employed, starting while in high school, with Chatham’s Grocery chain 11 years and Ford Motor, Detroit for a time, and then took a position with the Department of Public Works in the city of Gross Pointe Woods. He retired in 1992, with 25 years of services. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles, U & I Club in Port Austin. Moose was an avid bowler enjoying many friendly games with his family and on leagues. He was involved with his children, coaching little league and had been very active in the Jaycees playing Santa for many years.

He was born on October 2, 1926 in Ubly to the late Thomas P. and Josephine P. (Maurer) Murray. He married Thelma Armstead on October 4, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Raymond attended Ubly Community School and Ag School. Raymond was a farmer and then an egg buyer for 16 years. He delivered Rainbow Bread for 7 years. Raymond also worked at Carmet for 10 years and Gemini Plastics for 6 years. Raymond was a World War II Veteran serving in the Army from 1945-1947. He was a member of Ubly TVO Post #1, Ubly VFW Zurek Graham Post 6965 and Allied Veterans Council. He was a current member of Good Shepherd Parish, St. John Catholic Church in Ubly where he served as an usher. Raymond was a Detroit Lions and Tigers fan. He also enjoyed reading, bird watching and driving Michigan roads.
