Gladys M. Hayes, 91, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. Gladys was born November 10, 1932 in Chandler Twp to the late John and Beatrice (Dailey) Hayes. She grew up around Owendale and attended several country schools. She was a homemaker, caregiver and farmhand. She was a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkton and the Elkton Senior Citizens. She enjoyed attending the Elkton Prayer Breakfasts, car rides, visiting with friends and family, and could often be found walking around town. The last several years of her life were spent at the Rose Garden Assisted Living in Elkton where she enjoyed time spent with other residents and staff.

Lloyd S. Fritz Sr., 83, of Owendale passed away Monday, November 20, 2023 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe surrounded by his family. Lloyd was born July 25, 1940 in Greenleaf Twp to the late Alvin and Geraldine (Carson) Fritz. He married Betty Welchner on April 20, 1968 at the Owendale United Methodist Church. Lloyd retired from Pigeon Manufacturing and worked at Michigan Sugar in Sebewaing. He enjoyed fishing, puzzles, card playing and spending time with his grandchildren.

James C. McKnight, Jr., age 90, of Bad Axe passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023. James was born on September 1, 1933, in Bad Axe, son of the late James C. and Irene (Near) McKnight, Sr. He married Beverly Gintner on July 5, 1958, in the Bad Axe Assembly of God Church. She preceded him in death on December 11, 2011. James, known as Jim to family and friends, was an avid hunter for all wildlife, including bear, deer, turkey, coyote, and even the once in a lifetime find of a wolverine. Jim was always on the lookout for wildlife creatures and could tell you the name of any kind of bird or animal. In the last few years of his life, Jim had a love for bird watching, catching sight of a family of turkeys, or observing the deer on his land. Known for being a true gentleman, Jim was loved and will be missed by many friends, family, and neighbors.

He was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. “Ace” loved automobile mustangs and could be considered a fanatic when it came to them. He owned several beautiful cars and loved to show them off. He enjoyed rebuilding them and taking them back to their original beauty. He worked as a bump and paint technician most of his life. He enjoyed racing motorcycles and cars at the Ubly dragway. He was an animal lover and had several dogs and cats.

Theodore Timothy Jayson, 69 years old of Port Hope, passed away on November 13, 2023 with his “sweetheart” Dawn Getynia holding his hand. He was born on April 22, 1954 to the late Theodore Thaddeus and Elizabeth Jane (Stump) Jayson. Teddy was an interesting character and fun to be with. He was a big man who filled the space with love, laughter and joy. He did historic muzzle loading re-enactments, built museum quality model planes, boats and cars and was a furniture refinisher by trade. He also built historically accurate black powder rifles. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

Linda E. Keefer, 70, of Pigeon, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe. Linda was born February 6, 1953 in Pigeon to Robert L. and the late Joyce (DeGrow) Smith. In 1971 she graduated from Laker High School and then received a teaching degree from Michigan State University. On November 10, 1973 she married Burt Keefer at Hayes United Methodist Church; they spent their 50th Wedding Anniversary together the day before she passed. Linda and Burt shared a passion in raising and showing Hackney ponies throughout their life together under the farm name Burlindy Farm. She retired in 2010 from Laker Schools as an Assistant Agri-Science teacher and FFA advisor. She was a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She enjoyed gardening and painting.

Clayton D. Esch, “Clayt,” age 98 of Pigeon, went to his Heavenly Home shortly after midnight on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Scheurer Health, Pigeon, following a recent diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was born in Pigeon on October 6, 1925, the son of Lewis and Maggie (Wideman) Esch. As a youth, he attended Sebewaing School, and the Winsor Country School. He was one of the last two living members of the Pigeon High School Class of 1943. As a young man, he met an Elkton girl named Freda Kivel. They were married on August 28, 1948. She preceded him in death on September 5, 2005. In the early years of his marriage, he worked as a farmer and for a local plumber for a few years, then took a job at Active Industries (now Autokiniton) where he was the plumbing and hydraulic supervisor for over 33 years. After retiring, he and his wife became the managers of Sigel Apartments in Pigeon. His interest in history led him to the Pigeon Historical Society where he championed fundraising for the construction of a storage building and was instrumental in the establishment of the Society’s Woelke Research Center. Clayt served as Pigeon Village Zoning Administrator for 23 years, as a member of the Pigeon Village Council for 5 years, was a humble recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Pigeon, and a member of St. Paul Methodist Church, Elkton. Seven years ago, Clayt moved to Country Bay Village where he enjoyed the weekly activities as well as playing card games or a game of chicken foot dominoes. He never contracted Covid, and would tell you the secret to staying healthy is inhaling fumes from melted Vicks VapoRub.

Jardine Zurek, age 94, of Bad Axe, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023. She was born on February 14, 1929 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Leo and Agnes (Glaza) Depcinski. She married Robert Zurek in 1971. He preceded her in death on March 26, 2007 Jardine worked at the seat belt factory and then became a homemaker after meeting her husband Bob. She loved to do counted cross stitch, play euchre, doing yardwork, going for rides and was a member of Daughters of Isabella for 25 years.

She retired as a dental assistant in 1990 and moved from Livonia to Caseville in 1991. She was a former Lake Twp Trustee and meal site manager for the Human Development Commission for 17 years. She was a member of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary. RoseAnn was a talented quilter and enjoyed the many friends she met through her quilting hobby.

Vern was born January 14, 1928 at home in Winsor Twp to the late Benjamin and Sadie (Ropp) Beachy. He married Dorothy Kilbourn on November 28, 1953 and she preceded him in death on March 12, 2004. He then married Marion McGee in 2005 and she preceded him in death in 2022. Vern was an independent truck driver, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Michigan Ave. Mennonite Church and Scenic Golf Course. He enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, hunting, playing cards and following his beloved Detroit Tigers and Lions.

Donna is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Gary; children, Candi (Paul) Vollweiler and Greg (Lauren) Gliniecki; 6 grandchildren, Abby, Jacob, Lily, and Ben Gliniecki, Kira and Suri Vollweiler; sisters, Nancy (Jay) McLuckie, Debbie Radtke; several nieces and nephews, Beth (Jason) Herb, Beckie (Eric Kieleszewski) McLuckie, Jim (Jenny) McLuckie, Charles (Ali) Karas, Chris Gliniecki, Kevin (Bri) Karas, Tom (Whitney) Gliniecki, Bryan (Melissa) Karas, Margaret (Eric) Stadig, and Audrey (Steven) Saliga; dogs, Rex and Pink. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Dolores Karas; granddaughters, Nyneve and Teela Vollweiler; sister, Pat Karas; brother; Mark (Cindy) Karas.
Donna Marie Gliniecki (Karas), age 63, of Parisville passed away after a brief battle with aggressive cancer on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in home hospice care surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 31, 1960, in Hamtramck, MI, to Stephen Sigismundis and Dolores Helen (Frydlewicz) Karas. Donna graduated from St. Florian High School in 1979. She earned her Associate's degree in Business Administration/Computer Information from Jordan College with Suma Cum Laude honors as well as a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Baker College with Magna Cum Laude honors. Donna had a variety of administrative and accounting jobs over the years, most recently as Superintendent’s Secretary and Pupil Accounting Officer at Huron Intermediate School District and also for Farm Bureau Insurance in Harbor Beach, Kelly & Company Realty in Cass City, Biddinger & Bitzer PLLC in Cass City, and many more. She was proud of her position as Field Operations Supervisor for the U.S. Census Bureau, and she also served as a Substitute Teacher in Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola Intermediate School Districts. She developed many strong, lasting friendships through her involvement with Amway. Donna volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and American Red Cross blood donor. Donna loved crafting and playing with her kids and grandkids. She had a passion for curating heartfelt and fitting song playlists for her loved ones. She enjoyed all holidays big and small, and celebrated with festive decorations and outfits. She enjoyed traveling, cruising, hot tubbing, deer hunting, and shopping (especially at Kohl’s) with her husband. She was nuts about squirrels.

Sylvester J. Polega, 88, of Kinde died October 30, 2023, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. He was born May 11, 1935, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Andreski) Polega. Sylvester was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic. He enjoyed farming, from which he retired in 1997. After his retirement he continued to have cattle and chickens.

Evelyn Zmierski Elzinga, age 86, of Cass City, passed away, Sun., Oct. 29, 2023 at her home. She was born Oct. 22, 1937, in Warren, to the late Christopher and Anna (Conley) Gabler. Evelyn was married to the late Walter Zmierski for 42 years and briefly to the late Alvin Elzinga. She was an expert at crossword puzzles and enjoyed baking, cooking, canning but No Onions! She also enjoyed Sunday dinners and red lipstick, but most of all loved knitting, sewing, crocheting, crafting, gardening and traveling. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

William James Roggenbuck, age 95, a life long farmer of Harbor Beach, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 29, 2023, at McLaren Hospital in Port Huron. The oldest of twelve children, he was born April 11, 1928, in Harbor Beach to the late Henry and Magdalene (Holdwick) Roggenbuck. Bill married Rosemary Mausolf October 10, 1953. He was a member of St. Anthony Helena Church and the Men's Club. Bill loved spending time with his family, big family meals, crop tours, euchre, and watching the Detroit Tigers.

William "Bill" Arthur Taylor Jr, 77, of Pigeon, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. Bill was born January 8, 1946 in Pontiac, MI to the late William Taylor and Helen (Stevens) Taylor. He married Mary Loney in 1973 at the home he was building on Sand Point. As a young man, Bill enjoyed water skiing, boxing, camping, and drag racing his Pontiac Tempest around Detroit. He attended The Leelanau School, where he met some of his lifelong and best friends. He graduated in 1965 from Birmingham Seaholm High School and attained a degree in auto marketing from Northwood University. He first visited Caseville area as a child on hunting and fishing trips with his father. He fell in love with the area and decided to move there as an adult in 1971. His first job in the area was at Caseville Lumber where he learned the construction trade and eventually started his own construction business. With the natural gifts of an engineer's mind, an artist's eye, and great attention to detail, Bill created beautiful homes and structures for the residents of Sand Point throughout his career. His love of nature, quiet, woodworking, mechanics, photography, boating, muscle cars, and trains (boy did he love trains) was only surpassed by his love of family.

Mary was born February 5, 1943 in Bad Axe to the late Glenn and Thelma (Hebner) Smithers. She graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1962. Mary worked for General Cable in Cass City for 35 years and as a clerk at the Caseville Family Market for 28 years. Mary enjoyed spending time visiting with family and friends, cooking, yard work, quilting, sewing, knitting and bird watching. She made friends quickly and was kind and generous to everyone she met. She opened her home to host 8 foreign exchange students.

Mrs. Lillian C. Kubacki, 87 of Ubly, passed away Monday, October 23, 2023 at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe while under hospice care. Lillian was born on February 18, 1936 in Bad Axe to the late Ira “Ike” and Vera (Franzel) Fisher. She married Elmer Kubacki on February 17, 1953 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. He preceded her in death after 48 wonderful years of marriage on January 8, 2001. Lillian was a graduate of Ubly High School. She was a Jill of all trades, from selling Avon to working at Ben Franklin, Clarks Foodland and finally retiring from Lyntex. She was a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly where she was a member of the Christan Mothers. She was a loyal volunteer of the Ubly Fox Hunters, working side by side with her husband. Raising eight daughters gave Lillian a chance to perfect her homemaker skills. She was known for her scrumptious sugar cookies and whipped them up for many school events and holidays. She loved trips to the casino, reading, dancing and puzzles. Her faith guided her through life and she taught her daughters to thrive the same way. Lillian cherished time spent with her loving family and her love will live on in all of them for the amazing mother, grandmother and wife she was.

Dorothy E. Henne, 94, of Bay Port, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Dorothy was born May 30, 1929 in Oliver Twp to the late Ernest Sr. and Marie (Wurst) Buchholz. She graduated in 1947 from Elkton High School having never missed a day of school. On November 6, 1948 she married Dale Henne at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon; he preceded her in death on August 10, 2009. Dorothy was a homemaker and farm wife, known for keeping a beautiful home and yard. She was a lifelong member of Cross Lutheran Church. She was talented at knitting, crocheting and crafting. She enjoyed baking and showing and selling her crafts at local shows.
