DOLORES KLANN, age 90 of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at her home. She was born on June 2, 1923 in Rogers City to the late Paul and Edna (Domke) Curtis. Dolores was a gracious and gentle lady who had a strong Christian Faith and love of family. She married Albert Klann in 1946 and resided in Sebewaing and Rogers City before moving to Harbor Beach. She attended Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Harbor Beach.

Ann S. McLellan age 94, of Pigeon, died early Saturday morning, December 7, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born June 8, 1919 in Chicago to the late Michael and Anna (Pawlus) Piorunek. They moved to Huron County when she was in her youth. She met her future husband, A. D. McLellan while living in Bad Axe. They married February 15, 1943 in Greenville, TX while he was in the Army and moved to Pigeon in June of 1956. Ann worked as a clerk at Eicher’s Cleaner, Pigeon for many years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Hope Parish, Pigeon and enjoyed sewing clothes for herself and others, including doll clothes for the grandchildren. Ann also enjoyed making crafts and gardening. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

MARILYN JOYCE EDWARDS, age 83 of Harbor Beach, passed away, surrounded by her family on Friday, December 06, 2013 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital,. She was born to the late Clarence Lindsay McCollough and Lucille (Hanna) McCollough on February 15, 1930 in her parents home in Dearborn. Marilyn was a resident of White Rock, south of Harbor Beach, and divided her time between Huron County and Wayne County. She and her family referred to Dearborn as “Down Home”, and Harbor Beach as “Up Home.” Marilyn lived life to the fullest. She loved politics, as she had a mother and brother in the State Legislature, and was active in many campaigns. She was a bookkeeper and office manager for various professional offices and retail stores. Marilyn was an active member of the White Rock one room School House Museum, and served as an elder for the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, hunting, fishing, and decorating for Christmas. It can be said that she participated fully in the life of her communities, family and nation.

Mary A. Klemmer age 90, of Bad Axe, died Friday evening, December 6, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born May 30, 1923 in Lake Twp. at the home of her parents, the late James and Mary (Stirrett) Yax. On July 26, 1941, she was united in marriage to Earl E. Klemmer at the Methodist parsonage in Bad Axe. They made their home in Bad Axe where they raised five children. Mary attended the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church and was a former member of the Pigeon VFW Auxiliary. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She and Earl enjoyed camping, playing cards and dancing to country music, she also loved to play bingo. Earl preceded her in death July 31, 1984.

Rosetta E. Perdue, 85, resident of Kinde, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Meadow Lane, Bad Axe. She was born January 8, 1928 in Port Hope to the late Adolph and Alice (Sternberg) Schewe. Rosetta was united in marriage to Walter Perdue on June 14, 1952 in Ohio. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1999. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope where she was also baptized as a child. Rose like spending time with her children and grandchildren, gardening, canning and going for walks. She enjoyed board games (was very good at Scrabble) crossword puzzles and cards, reading her Bible and attending church. She especially enjoyed St. John’s Christmas Eve Service. She will be remembered for her laugh and kindness. Rose was a great cook, mother, grandmother and friend.

LEWIS I. BROWN, age 87 of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013, at his home under hospice care. He was born on May 19, 1926 to the late Warren and Erma (Lewis) Brown. He and Emma Sheffield were united in marriage on August 22, 1950 in Columbiaville. Lewis served in the US Army during World War II. Lewis was a retired butcher from Merrifield Market and Foodtown in Harbor Beach, and also worked at Maurer Meat Packing, after his retirement. He was a former baseball coach in Harbor Beach and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt and go camping. Lewis was a member of the American Legion Post 197 of Harbor Beach. Lewis would like to thank Cheryl Rice for her compassion and care during his treatments.

Viola is survived by two sisters, Virginia Kowalski who resides at Meadow Lane in Bad Axe and Gertrude Thayer who resides on the family farm, many nieces and nephews. Those who know her as “dear friend” are too many to mention, Steve and Janis Harmon, Arvella Majeski, and Sr. Judy O’Brien are among those considering themselves especially blessed through her friendship. Viola was preceeded in death by a sister, Frances Heiffron and four brothers, Florian , Stanley, Walter, and Alex Szeszycki (Fisher).
Viola was born on June 26, 1909 in Grindstone City to the late Anthony and Mary (Horetski) Szeszycki Fisher), and later moved to the family farm on Crockard Road in Port Austin. Viola was united in marriage to Wallace Ignash on February 3, 1934 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin. They resided in Kinde where they ran an excavating business together until Wallace’s death on April 5, 1970. Viola continued to live in their home until recent surgery took her to Courtney Manor. Viola’s membership in the St. Edward Church is an enduring legacy of generous devotion. She served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, opened the church doors well in advance of any gathering, assisted in funeral preparations (especially in peeling potatoes); folded bulletins; prepared endless materials for faith formation classes; single-handed, painted the church basement; planted and weeded summer flower beds; prepared Spartan labels for redemption; morning, noon, or night Viola was literally available for anything that “needed to be done”! Viola was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella, and the Kinde Senior Citizens. She cared for every flower, tree and shrub in her yard as well as feeding the birds, and welcoming additional cats to her “two”. In the summer she could be seen watering the flowerpots lining Main Street in town.

Dale Duane Otto, age 80, resident of Bad Axe,MI passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 at his home after an extended illness. He was born January 17, 1933 in Pigeon, MI to the late John and Lora (Gremel) Otto . Dale was united in marriage to Rita Dubs on October 23, 1987. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School in Berne, MI and graduated from Pigeon High School, Class of 1951. Dale served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1952 to 1955. After being discharged, he attended Central University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. Dale taught school in Almont and Sand Creek before coming to the Bad Axe School District in 1965. He left teaching in 1972 and became an agent for State Farm Insurance until his retirement in 1995. Dale was a very active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Verona Hills Golf Club, enjoyed woodworking and oil painting before his stroke in 2005. Dale was past president of the Bad Axe Lions Club.

Joan M. Lawson age 81, of Souletown in Chandler Twp. died peacefully Sunday evening, November 24, while under hospice care with her family by her side.. She was born September 6, 1932 in Oliver Twp. to the late Arthur and Mabel (Stirrett) Soper and moved to the Detroit area in her teens. On July 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Andrew S. Lawson in Roseville, GA while he was in the service. They lived and worked in the Detroit area until 1976, when they came back to Huron County to their place in Souletown. He preceded her in death May 27, 2006. Joan was a homemaker all her life and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Lillian was preceded in death by her son Ronald Karg, grandson Michael Grekowicz, and two brothers: William and George Engel.
Lillian L. Karg, age 94 of Harbor Beach, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. She was born on May 8, 1919 in Port Hope to the late Fred and Margaret (Kaufman) Engel. Lillian was baptized on June 1, 1919 by Rev. Emil Burner at Port Hope Lutheran Church, and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach on May 20, 1934 by Rev. A.C. Neuchterlein. She and Lawrence Karg were united in marriage on May 15, 1937 at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. A.C. Neuchterlein. He preceded her in death on June 9, 2000. Lillian was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Harbor Beach, the Ladies Aide, and Farm Bureau. She enjoyed working on the Farm, Gardening, jigsaw puzzles, bingo, and spending time with her family.

Mr. Robert V. Puvalowski, 70 of Ubly, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City. Robert was born on November 7, 1943 in Argyle to the late Raymond V. and Grace M. (Grifka) Puvalowski. He married Kathryn Henry on June 19, 1965 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. Robert was a 1963 Ubly High School graduate. He farmed with his family most of his life. He was a lifelong member of St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Robert was also a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed bowling in his younger years and liked westerns, playing cards. He truly enjoyed traveling throughout Michigan and to Arizona, Florida and Missouri. Robert cherished time spent visiting with his family and grandchildren.

Javen Donald Krohn, 18, of Caseville, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013 in an automobile accident in Sanilac County’s Delaware Township. Javen was born March 10, 1995 in Bay City. He graduated from EPBP Laker High School in 2013, where he had been a stand-out athlete in soccer (All-State) and baseball. He was a culinary arts student at Baker College, Port Huron in addition to working in the kitchen at Shooters (formerly Shaggy J’s) in Pigeon. Javen was a generous and kind young man, who thought more of others than himself. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and attending church, school and social functions, especially taking family vacations with his friend Wes. Ever the perfectionist, he readily accepted challenges and would not give up until he had mastered whatever it was that was before him; the more he was challenged, the harder he tried.

He was born in Fairgrove, Michigan to Walter and Jane Mitin on August 25, 1918, and graduated from the Snell Country School. He was a proud WW II veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Battle of Normandy and various stations throughout Europe and was the recipient of numerous medals including five Bronze Stars. On June 1, 1946 he was married to Marjorie Marie Yantzi at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Pigeon. She preceded him in death on September 6, 2013. John enjoyed a long career as a dairy farmer and served on several county-wide agricultural committees as well as the Winsor Township Board. He was the last elected trustee of Snell School before the consolidation with the Pigeon School District. John especially enjoyed his many years of service on the Board of Directors of the Pigeon Cooperative Elevator. John was a faithful, active member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon where he served on many administrative committees over the years. His life was guided by his deep Christian faith and patriotic beliefs as he raised his family with loving kindness and a gentle spirit. Following retirement, John and Marjorie moved to Port Richey, Florida where they lived for 16 years before moving back to Michigan to be closer to their family.

John Kanaski Sr., age 79 of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, November 18,2013 at McLaren Hospital of Bay City. He was born on June 26, 1934 in Kinde, MI., son of the late Floyd and Agnes (Jimkowski) Kanaski. He married Arlene Elliott on December 3, 1955 in POrt Hope, MI. John was employed as a supervisor at Active Industries in Elkton before his retirement. He also worked for Ubly Motor Sales, the Michigan Sugar Piling Grounds in Verona, and cut the lawn at Verona Schools for several years. He enjoyed being a self employed mechanic and painter, and quilting and sewing as a hobby. He especially enjoyed spending time with his loving family and his faithful dog, Casper.
