We've heard of the "Little Engine That Could", for an Oscoda teacher at Richardson Elementary it's got nothing on the "Little Boat That Could." Third grade teacher Amanda Goodman (below) as part of studies in her class, was reading the 1950's "Paddle By The Sea" and also hearing about a similar boats' journey in the '80s. This led to the creation of the little red, white and blue boat that was launched April 18th from the pier in Oscoda. The tiny vessel bobbed and drifted across the lake, coming to land April 30th to be found by an individual at Port Crescent State Park. On the bottom of the boat were instructions asking that anyone finding it, write about the discovery. A postcard has already been received. She told us they were wary that it would even be found, but it apparently has been making stops in the Port Austin area. Goodman said it's exciting getting the community involved.
One of the people who have come across the little vessel is Kenzie Prill. She told us she had gotten home from work and was playing with the dog, who ran off and started sniffing around the boat's location. She first saw some red, white and blue colors, thinking its was a piece of wood so she picked it up and looked it over. She saw the information carved on the boat, and was familiar with the book. She has written a letter on finding the boat and is expected to mail it this week. She has sent the boat back out into the water over the weekend, waiting for a calm day to make sure it would head out into the bay. She told us the experience took her back to when she was a child. She recently graduated with a Master's Degree and it was symbolic because the boat was off on its journey and she was starting her next journey. There is also a Facebook Page that you can track the progress of the boat. A link can be found below along with a video of the launch..
