Numbers show the state is in a fourth wave of the COVID pandemic. The number of hospitalizations from the virus is at an all-time high of about 4,200 in hospitals across the state, and the virus shows no signs of slowing down, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). During the third wave of the virus about seven months ago, the record number of hospitalizations was 4,158. The CDC noted a majority of new cases in Michigan are those who are unvaccinated.   To help control the fourth surge of the virus, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is urging people to wear masks in public, and wash hands often. The number of COVD cases since the pandemic started 20 months ago is now more than 1.3 million. Today, the MDHHS reported 25,329 more confirmed cases from Thursday through today for a total of 1,301,593 cases. That averages out to be 5,066 new cases per day over the five-day span. Also since Wednesday there have been 137 deaths for a total of 23,732 fatal cases. However, of that number 57 deaths were identified during a review of vital records.   Also, the report noted that 1,090,933 people who had COVID were able to recover. To be considered as recovered, the person has to be alive and out of the hospital.   The number of probable cases in the state total 170,966, and probable deaths total 1,647. A probable case means there is a possibility the person was exposed to the virus or has possible symptoms of the virus so they are being monitored.   A probable death means the death is being studied further to determine if it was COVID caused.   In Huron County, there have been 4,308 cases, and 94 deaths since the pandemic started. Probable cases total 1,360, and there are 8 probable deaths to be reviewed.   Tuscola County's cases total 7,154, and there have been 199 fatal cases of the virus. Probable cases total 1,456, and probable deaths total 18.   Sanilac County's cases total 5,162, and there have been 138 deaths. Probable cases total 843, and probable deaths total 10.   In Lapeer County, there are 11,287 cases, and there have been 264 fatal cases of the virus. There are 2,280 probable cases that are being monitored, and 8 probable deaths waiting to be examined to determine if they were caused by the virus.   Bay County has had 15,606 cases, and 403 deaths since the pandemic started.    According to the MDHHS report, Midland County has 10,828 cases, and 145 deaths.   Saginaw County has had 29,344 cases, and 681 deaths.   The report says there have been 47, 321 cases in Genesee County, and 1,080 deaths.   The report noted Oakland County has had 146,132 cases, and 2,615 deaths.   In St. Clair County, there have been 21,287 cases, and 525 deaths.    There have been 128,291 cases confirmed in Macomb County, and 2,696 deaths.    Detroit City has 68,459 cases, and 2,518 COVID deaths.   In Wayne County, there have been 142,760 cases, and 2,957 deaths.   The John Hopkins University of Medicine reported today global cases total 261,862,513, and COVID has caused 5,204,346 deaths. Cases of the virus in the United State's total 48,283,246, and it has caused 777,164 deaths.
