Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed December as Michigan Christmas Tree Month, spotlighting the economic, environmental and cultural importance of the state's Christmas tree industry. Michigan ranks third nationally for Christmas trees harvested, supplying about 2 million trees worth more than $45 million annually, plus another $5 million from wreaths, garlands and other greenery.
State officials and the Michigan Christmas Tree Association kicked off the month with a tour of Peacock Road Family Farm in Laingsburg, a destination that offers cut your own and pre?cut trees along with family holiday activities.
Michigan has more than 500 Christmas tree farms covering over 33,000 acres, growing more wholesale varieties than any other state, including Fraser fir, Scotch pine, blue spruce, Douglas fir, concolor fir and Canaan fir.
Real trees are promoted as an environmentally friendly choice because they grow on marginal land, provide wildlife habitat, absorb carbon dioxide, and can be fully recycled, often as mulch after the holidays.
For every tree harvested, Michigan growers plant three new trees, helping sustain the industry and future holiday supplies.
Residents can use the Michigan Christmas Tree Association and Michigan Agritourism websites to find farms and lots, and the state recycling directory to locate post?holiday tree recycling options.
