Harbor Beach is bringing home another football state title, after the Pirates beat Hudson 31-20 in the Division 8 championship game at Ford Field in Detroit this morning.
Both teams came in undefeated at 13-0, but Harbor Beach pulled away to finish a perfect 14-0 season and claim the program's second D-8 crown, adding to its 2012 championship. The win also marks a school record for victories in a season during the MHSAA playoff era.
Harbor Beach jumped out to a 21-0 lead behind two first-quarter touchdown passes from senior quarterback Caden Bucholtz to tight ends Skiler Kruse and Matt Geiger, plus a 25-yard TD run by Bucholtz early in the second quarter. Hudson answered with long, clock eating scoring drives and twice pulled within one score, but a third quarter TD run and late 20-yard field goal from Kruse pushed the Pirates back in front by 11.
Bucholtz led Harbor Beach with 146 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while going 5-for-8 passing for 82 yards and two scores. Kruse finished with 60 receiving yards, added an 11-yard TD run and the late field goal, while linebacker John Learman paced the defense with 16 tackles and Benson Harper sealed the win with a late interception.
For Hudson, Grayson Bills ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, with sophomore fullback Beckett Campbell adding 103 rushing yards and a long kickoff return that set up the Tigers' final threat. Quarterback Colt Perry contributed 76 rushing yards and a 53-yard TD run, but Hudson's last drive stalled at the Harbor Beach 25-yard line as the Pirates ran out the clock on their second state championship.
