Lapeer County Commissioners Are Concerned About Finances

Having to do more with less is a concern of the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners.
Budgeting and staffing changes were discussed by the board as they worry about the coming 2026 budget.
During discussions, having to layoff some positions was a proposed possibility to help with finances along with doing a comprehensive review of overall staffing needs.
There were requests from department heads about adding three more staff to the county's roster of employees. That will be scrutinized during future meetings, and once more information is known about the county’s financial picture.
The county's next fiscal year starts on Jan. 1, 2026.
Because of financial concerns, the board approved disbanding the county's building authority. Besides saving money, it was felt doing that would streamline operations.
In moving forward with other concerns, it was decided to create an ad hoc committee to oversee the financing of the new community mental health building that has been in the planning stages for several years.
That project is moving forward because it has been determined there is a significant need to address the mental health needs of county residents.
