The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is highlighting Cybersecurity Awareness Month by urging residents to take extra precautions against online scams and cyberattacks.

DIFS Director Anita Fox emphasized that cybercriminals continually develop new methods to steal personal and financial data, making proactive protection a critical habit. The department encourages Michiganders to stay informed and follow trusted security practices to safeguard their finances and identity.

To prevent cybercrime, DIFS advises residents to use unique passwords of at least 12 characters, enable multi-factor authentication, verify the legitimacy of online communications, keep devices updated, and remain cautious about unsolicited requests for account information. Financial institutions will never ask for passwords or sensitive details over calls or messages.

The agency also enforces cybersecurity standards across Michigan's insurance and financial sectors through the Michigan Insurance Data Security Law. The law requires insurers and producers to maintain information security programs and report significant breaches to DIFS. Additionally, the Fraud Investigation Unit continues to partner with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute financial and insurance-related cybercrimes.

Consumers can report suspected fraudulent activity to DIFS by calling 877-999-6442 or by filing a complaint online at CLICK HERE FOR MI DIFS COMPLAINT FORM.
