A key business in downtown Sebewaing is nothing but a memory now.

Earlier this month the Huron County Land Bank demolished the former Ben Franklin store at 244 North Center St.

During this month's Sebewaing Village meeting, it was reported the building is totally gone, the property has been cleaned up, and top soil and grass seed is being put down.

There was no cost to the village for any of that work because it was done by the Huron County Land Bank working in conjunction with the Huron County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to have the building removed.

That building dates back to the 1920s and had been in the Pitcher family for three generations before it was sold.

The store has been abandoned since about the mid-1990s and fell into disrepair.

The store is not the only building to be demolished.

Earlier this year the buildings along Center Street on the other side of the river that housed a restaurant, a movie theater, and a beauty shop decades ago were razed by the Huron County Land Bank as well.

Over the last few years about seven former businesses in the downtown met the wrecking ball.

In other village matters, the council approved a one-year variance to allow three goats to be raised at 399 East St. in the village, and a three-year contract with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Software Agreement was approved at a cost of $27,498.
