The Croswell City Council conducted a public hearing regarding the safety of a residence and what can be done about the issue.
During the hearing, Officer Scott Bickle, who is the city's ordinance officer, explained his background and experience.
According to Bickle, he has visited the residence multiple times and has noted his concerns for the safety of the family and neighbors.
Bickle reported the residence is at high risk for fires due to open electrical and multiple sources of fuel related to blight, did 25 daily visits, did 14 contacts, three reports, six verbal warnings and issued one citation over the last eight months.
After the hearing, the council had to make a decision to either demolish the residence or take action to spend money to make it safe.
During discussion, it was noted the residents had a history of non-compliance and even if the money was available to make the residence safe how would they assure the home wouldn't be in the same situation a year from now.
There were concerns of safety of the children and the homes of neighbors.
Previously, council members had been shown a video of the condition of the home.
After a lengthy discussion and much consideration, the council approved demolishing the residence at 144 North Howard Street.
Another issue that was brought to the council was complaints about the Graham Park's caretaker not taking care of the park.
Following that discussion, the council approved enacting a committee to review the park's future and its options.
