Ellington Twp, MI - According to a source familiar with the details, a crash in Tuscola County left three people dead and several others critically injured Friday night.
The Tuscola County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) says deputies responded to the intersection of Deckerville Road and Hurds Corner Road around 9:02 p.m. on September 26, 2025. Callers reported multiple people injured, possible ejections, and severe damage following the collision.
According to investigators, a 55-year-old Florida man was driving a loaded semi-truck southbound on Hurds Corner Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign. The semi collided with a Jeep carrying eight Cass City residents traveling eastbound on Deckerville Road.
Authorities confirm that three occupants of the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining passengers were rushed to area hospitals by two medical helicopters and Mobile Medical Response (MMR) units, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The semi-truck driver and his passenger, a female, suffered minor injuries and were also transported for treatment. The driver was later arrested, and a report is being sent to the Tuscola County Prosecutor for possible charges.
A wide range of agencies responded to the scene, including the City of Caro Fire Department, Caro Police Department, Elkland Township Fire Department, Cass City Police Department, Kingston Fire Department, Kingston Village Police Department, Michigan State Police, Argyle Township Fire Department, Huron and Sanilac County ambulances, Medstar Life Flight, Flightcare, Tuscola County Road Commission, Emergency Management, Bullet Auto & Truck Service Center, and Mike's Wrecker Service. The intersection remained closed for several hours.
The Tuscola County Sheriff's Office described the event as a mass casualty incident (MCI), a term used when the number and severity of injuries overwhelm available resources. Dispatchers were inundated with nearly 25 calls to 911 for this single crash while simultaneously handling other emergencies, including medicals, assaults, and other vehicle accidents. Dispatchers had to quickly triage the calls to get critical information from those with direct access to the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved. However "Putman Family Medicine" shared a heartbreaking statement to their Facebook claiming the lives lost where members of the Putman Family as "Papa", "Aunt Meghan", and "Nee Nee". More information will be released as the story unflods and the investigation is still ongoing. The TCSO is urging the public to exercise more caution while driving to prevent such devastating accidents.
