Huron County Small Livestock Association
Secretary Minutes
Date: Monday, September 15, 2025
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Place: Huron County Expo Center
Officer Conducting: Al Kuhn

Approval of Previous Minutes
The September minutes were presented by Samantha Bismack. A motion to approve was made by Sheila Grifka and seconded by Shannon Bowman. Motion passed.

Treasurer's Report
The treasurer’s report was presented by Samantha Bismack. A motion to approve was made by Vickie Yackle and seconded by Katie Jo Volmering. Motion approved.
A question was raised about grant distribution. It was explained that funds will come in stages.

Fair Board Reports
Fair Board representatives Gary Protzman and Don Wheeler reported:

Stockholder meeting set for November.

This year's fair revenue was close to 2024 levels.

Members were encouraged to purchase stock for voting rights.

The next fair grant will fund updated emergency action plans.

4-H Report
Presented by Patti Errer:

New year enrollment is open for youth, leaders, and superintendents.

JLA Report
No representative was present.

Committee Reports
Barn Improvement: Al Kuhn reported exterior work on the new barn is nearly complete. Volunteer efforts helped keep progress on schedule.

Halloween Weekend: Haley Talaski outlined planned activities and noted some location changes at the fairgrounds. Camping sites remain available.

Awards: Committee reported:

Chairs were well-received.

Medals preferred over rosettes.

Blankets received mixed feedback.

Tumbler-style cups were popular with buyers.

Suggestions for 2026 awards are welcome.

2025 SLA Sale Numbers
Goats: 157 units (down 20), $132,275.00 total, average $842.52

Rabbits: 84 units (up 18), $41,050.84 total, average $488.69

Poultry: 54 units (down 3), $26,350.00 total, average $487.96

Crafts: 77 units (up 15), $35,625.00 total, average $462.66

Totals:

2024 sale: $219,925.00

2025 sale: $241,000.00

Increase: $22,025.00

Superintendent Comments
Rabbits: Need additional mini sawhorses and black bases.

Poultry: Need more black bottoms and a new scale; motion passed to purchase. Inventory to follow.

Goats: New 2026 rule - exhibitors age 11+ must show goats weighing at least 50 pounds; ages 6-10 may still enter pet goats.

Fair Entry: Registration dates for JLA and SLA shows will differ beginning in 2026.

New Business
Fair Book: Submit 2026 changes by December.

SLA Board Meeting: To be scheduled soon.

Terms: Al Kuhn's term expires this year; he will seek re-election.

2025 SLA Fair Expenses: Motion to pay $4,000 to the Fair Board for SLA expenses approved.

2026 Fair Dates: August 2-8, 2026.

Open Floor
Request made to update turkey and geese pens. Committee agreed as funding permits.

Adjournment
Motion to adjourn at 7:15 p.m. was made by Katie Jo Volmering and seconded by Vicki Yackle. Motion passed.

Next Meeting: Monday, November 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Huron County Expo Center, scheduled later to include possible updates from the annual stockholder meeting.
