Croswell Approves Funding Water Improvement Project

The Croswell City Council had lengthy discussions regarding water service issues and funding before making a decision on what to do.
The council discussed the potential of using the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) for the water-line projects.
Streets Anderson and George and Jackson Court will be connected in a loop to tie into Nims Street.
The loop will go under the Black River at Harrington Street North of Nims where there is a cast iron connection.
The project could qualify for a 2 percent loan, but there isn't any additional grant money at this time.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has a three year water service plan that could help towards paying off the loan.
The loop work is being done to improve water flow by increasing the size of the pipe with the lines that are being replaced.
During the meeting, it was noted that if the city turns down the funding for the project, the city will be ineligible to apply next year.
The estimated cost of the project is $2 million and the city received 15 percent discount on the loan due to the city's good credit score.
If the offer is accepted, it will be about $75,000 per year to pay it off and cost $2 per resident per month.
It was explained that if the city decided to do the project later, the interest rates are subject to increase and there might not be grant money available.
After talking things over, the council approve going with DWSRF for the water project.
