Of all of the many dangerous situations Sebewaing Village Police Chief Steve Repkie has faced during his career, an accident at home has taken him out of commission.
While Repkie was trying to hang some lights from the rafters in his pole barn he fell 14 feet.
While he was leaning forward on the ladder to rig up the lights, the ladder kicked out from under him.
The fall resulted in his back being fractured in two places (L3 and T12), a tibial plateau fracture and his left knee, as well as a left heel fracture.
Repkie was taken by ambulance to Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon and then transferred to a hospital in Saginaw.
So far, he has had two surgeries. His left knee is in an external cage and his right heel has been screwed back together.
In his usual jovial manner, Repkie said he has a few hurdles to get over before he can return to duty.
In the meantime, his two canine officers Apollo and Zeus, who are also faithful companions, will be standing by him.
"I am blessed to have the officers that I have, as well as our community has at the Village of Sebewaing Police Department. I know that the officers will carry on providing exceptional police services for our community until I am able to return," Repkie said.
Until that time, Sgt. Drew Gokey is in command of the police station.
