PORT AUSTIN - The Huron County Sheriff's Office investigated a personal watercraft accident in Lake Huron near Port Austin earlier this month that left one person injured.
According to the official boating accident report, the crash happened at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4th, in Port Austin Harbor, outside the harbor to the north.
Investigators say the operator was cruising at approximately 40 miles per hour when the watercraft overturned on top of him.
The vessel was a 2016 Sea-Doo GTI 130 personal watercraft, powered by a 130-horsepower Rotax inboard gasoline engine. The report lists approximately $500 in damage to the watercraft.
The operator suffered injuries that included a laceration and a sprain or strain. The report indicates he was treated at McLaren Thumb Region and was not incapacitated for 24 hours or more.
Conditions at the time were reported as clear, with calm water, moderate winds and good visibility. The air temperature was listed at 79 degrees.
The report indicates the watercraft had approved lifesaving devices aboard and accessible, but they were not being used at the time of the accident. Investigators reported no indication of alcohol or drug involvement, and no arrest was made.
The incident was reported to the Huron County Sheriff's Office, 120 South Heisterman Street in Bad Axe, and was documented as a watercraft crash.
