The roar of powerful tractors filled the fairgrounds today as the annual tractor pull took center stage during the 158th Huron Community Festival.
Sponsored by Tri County Equipment, the event challenges competitors to pull a weighted sled as far as possible down the track. While each run is timed and speed is recorded, the winner is determined by distance - not by how fast the tractor travels.
The opening test pull reached 311.07 feet at 18.9 miles per hour. As the first competitor in the class, the driver has the option of taking another attempt at the end of the class under competition rules.
Other early distances included 305.84, 310.12, 300.38 and 295.78 feet. Later runs measured 307.23 feet at 22.5 miles per hour, followed by pulls of 302.13, 309.17, 311.83 and 303.14 feet.
With just inches often separating the top finishers, every pull counts as competitors continue battling for the longest distance and a spot at the top of the standings during one of the festival's signature events.
