The Huron County Planning Commission will conduct a special meeting at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 12th in room 305 of the Huron County Building at 250 East Huron Ave., Bad Axe.

According to the preliminary agenda, the meeting is for the commission to consider text amendments to utility-scale solar energy facility, and battery energy storage system ordinances.

Planning commissioners may also review existing ordinances for text amendments.

During Tuesday's county commissioners meeting, the board approved extending the moratorium on solar permits for additional 30 days.

Once again that issue received several comments from audience members at the meeting during public comments.

The issue was also addressed at length by commissioners who expressed frustration over the number of years the planning commission has worked on solar farms, battery storage facilities, and data centers.

The process started six years ago. Because of that, some commissioners wanted this extension to be the last one.

Pinesap Solar Project Manager Ella Hacket also expressed concerns about the moratorium being extended as it did not provide for an exception for the Ranger Power project, which has been in the works for sometime.

She noted the company will be forced to file an application with the state, and offered to work with others on this issue.

Commissioner Steve Vaughan suggested the planning commission do workshops where there would not have to be an hour of public comments so progress could be made on ordinances.

Per the planning commission's policy, meetings are only conducted for two hours.

During discussion it was noted, if the commission wanted to, they could extend the meeting time.
