The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is encouraging pet owners to make sure their animals are current on vaccinations before wrapping up their summer travel and outdoor activities.

State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says camping, hiking, road trips and other outdoor adventures can increase animals' exposure to diseases spread by wildlife, insects, other animals and environmental sources. She recommends owners talk with their veterinarian about vaccines that best fit their animal's age, lifestyle and risk of exposure.

MDARD says vaccinations help protect animals from serious illnesses, including rabies, can reduce costly veterinary treatments, and help prevent the spread of disease to other animals—and in some cases, people. Vaccinations are also commonly required for boarding, grooming, training facilities and many travel destinations.

Michigan law requires dogs and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies, and some cats entering the state must also meet rabies vaccination requirements. The department notes that horses, rabbits and other companion animals also have species-specific vaccine recommendations.

Officials also encourage owners to review vaccination records before traveling, keep documentation readily available and check any vaccination or health certificate requirements before crossing state or international borders.

More information on recommended vaccinations and animal health is available through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development or by contacting a local veterinarian.
