Michigan is reporting the highest number of illnesses tied to two separate produce-related outbreaks under investigation.
Taylor Fresh Foods has recalled certain jalapeno peppers sold at retailers including Walmart, Kroger and Trader Joe's after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak. Nationwide, more than 300 illnesses have been reported, including four cases in Michigan.
Health officials are also continuing to investigate a cyclospora outbreak connected to pre-packaged lettuce. As of August 6th, more than 12,000 cases have been reported in Michigan.
Michigan State University food safety expert Wade Syers says the recalls show the food safety system is working by identifying contaminated products and removing them from store shelves.
The FDA urges consumers not to eat recalled items, and anyone who believes they've become sick should contact a healthcare provider.
