Little by little the village of Owendale is making progress on eliminating a deficit that occurred in 2014.
Because there is a deficit, the village has to present a "General Fund Deficit Elimination Plan" to the state department of treasury each year until the deficit is paid off.
During the last village meeting, Treasurer Lori Limberger reported a Deficit Elimination Plan letter and documents were given to each council member to review before it was sent to the state.
A variety of issues over the years led to the state getting involved, but the situation isn't as bad as it sounds, according to Clerk Randy Howard.
The village doesn't really have any money issues, but there were bookkeeping errors made by a volunteer treasure in 2014 that needs to be addressed and worked on.
"This is the same general fund deficit we've been working on for several years, and it was improved by $67,000 this year so now the deficit is down to $102,000," explained Howard.
The person who volunteered to take on the treasurer duties did the best he could and tried to help the village, but some things were not done right.
That created the financial issue with the state.
The financial issue the village is facing is because of the way recording finances was done that did not meet the state's guidelines so that raised a red flag with the state.
