Although construction of an energy storage facility won't start for another year, the Fairgrove Township Board of Trustees received a state grant to help pave the way for it.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy's Renewables Ready Communities program awarded the township a $500,000 grant.
That money from the state will be used to strengthen the infrastructure and services for residents as the building is being built.
The township will receive half of the money up front and the rest when the facility is operational.
The money will be used for the Tuscola II Energy Storage Center as the project progresses to build a 100-megawatt battery facility.
Construction of the storage center is expected to start in 2027.
