Despite rough weather on Lake Huron, dozens of boating enthusiasts took part in the second annual Saginaw Bay Powerboat Run over the weekend.
Event organizer Jerald Ignash said 77 boats registered for the run, with 62 reaching the first stop in Port Austin despite stormy conditions and rough water. Only six boats completed the full route to Tawas Harbor as deteriorating weather forced many participants to end their runs early.
Although conditions shortened the day on the water, organizers continued with the scheduled awards dinner and raffle in Caseville. Ignash said the event's success wasn't measured solely by the number of boats completing the course, but by the opportunity to showcase Michigan's Thumb region to visitors from across the performance boating community.
Participants praised the hospitality of the local communities, with many saying the welcoming atmosphere and waterfront celebrations made the trip worthwhile despite the challenging conditions. Several well-known Great Lakes performance boat owners attended the event, which featured a street party in downtown Caseville and stops along the Lake Huron shoreline.
Organizers say the goal of the Saginaw Bay Powerboat Run is to highlight the area's boating destinations while giving enthusiasts another opportunity to enjoy Michigan waters. Despite Mother Nature's interference this year, many participants expressed plans to return for future runs.
