The hiring of a road patrol deputy brought a recent Huron County policy back into the spotlight at Tuesday morning's Huron County Board of Commissioners meeting. A resolution to hire Josh Loss to the sheriffs road patrol came about after he had taken a leave of absence to go to the police academy. Under the county's new policy his time as a corrections officer was used to calculate his salary through the Rohmberg salary study system. It resulted in an increase in pay of 51 hundred dollars over the salary Sheriff Kelly Hanson (right) had sought for a new road officer. The additional funds put the new hires' salary above about a half a dozen road officers who have been on the job for years. There were a number of sheriffs office personnel at the meeting. The board passed the hiring resolution with the increase in the salary on a 5 to 2 vote, with Commissioners John Bodis and Sami Khoury voting no. Bodis emphasized he had no problem with the person being hired, but because of the policy that increased the salary he voted no. Following the meeting Hanson told us that he expected road officers who have been on the job for years and making less to file grievances on the issue, and it will be a topic in the upcoming collective bargain negotiations.
