The Sandusky City Council approved moving forward with increasing utility rates and to seek a bond to finance an extensive water main and wastewater treatment plant improvements.

The plan for the Bridgehampton Street project is to replace the three-inch water lines with a six-inch water line to increase water flow for customers and for fighting fires.

The Bridgehampton Street project is to do improvements for the water lines and sewer between Austin Street and Maple Valley Streets.

Some of the improvements at the wastewater treatment plant is doing upgrades to the biosolids processing equipment and to replace the grit clarifier.

The estimated cost of those improvements is about $650,000 so a capital improvement bond is going to be sought.

To help fund the project, the water and sewer rates will be increasing next month.

The council approved sending notices to residents about the increases and why they are necessary.

The ready to serve water rate will increase to $19.50 from $17.49.

The ready to serve water rate for 3,333 gallons will increase to $23.80 from $23.20, and the sewer rate will increase to $12.56 from $10.25.
