A Michigan high school student is receiving national recognition after placing among the nation's top scholars in American history.
Rowan Kozminski earned third place in the U.S. Department of Education's Presidential 1776 Award, a nationwide academic competition honoring exceptional knowledge of America's founding and constitutional history.
Students from all 50 states first completed the rigorous Impossible Civics Test online. The highest-scoring competitors advanced through regional semifinal rounds before traveling to Washington, D.C., for the national championship.
The three national finalists were recognized at the White House, where they met with President Donald Trump. Kozminski says he plans to study economics at the University of Pennsylvania.
The national champion was homeschool student Miriam Washut of Wyoming, while Summer Brondstetter of Washington finished second and announced plans to attend Hillsdale College. President Trump offered to write Brondstetter a letter of recommendation during the White House visit.
Combined scholarship awards totaling $250,000 were presented to the three finalists, who also received Presidential Challenge Coins in recognition of their achievement.
