The Midland County Sheriff's Office is introducing a new program designed to improve emergency response for individuals on the autism spectrum.
The initiative, known as ALERT, which stands for Autism Law Enforcement Recognition and Trust, gives families the option to voluntarily share information with 911 dispatchers and first responders about a person with autism who may be at a home or traveling in a vehicle.
Sheriff Scott Holzinger says the program is intended to help deputies recognize autism-related behaviors, communicate more effectively, and reduce the risk of misunderstandings during emergency calls. Families enrolled in the program can also request free decals to identify participating homes or vehicles.
Officials say the effort is aimed at improving safety for both first responders and community members by promoting better awareness and de-escalation during emergency situations.
Hopefully other police departments across the state will follow suit and adopt this program to help autistic residence across Michigan.
