Authorities in Sanilac County are investigating a late-night crash that sent a vehicle into a water-filled ravine.

The Sanilac County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called around 11:30 Saturday night to the 2000 block of Marlette Road in Watertown Township.

Investigators say a 41 year old Croswell man was traveling east when his 2008 Chevrolet Malibu left the roadway, broke through a guardrail, crossed a culvert, and plunged into a ravine where the vehicle became submerged.

Despite the crash, the driver was able to free himself from the sinking vehicle before walking to a nearby residence to call for assistance.

He was taken to McLaren Port Huron with injuries. Officials have not released his identity as the investigation into the crash remains active.
