The Sanilac County Election Commission determined the proposed recall of
Watertown Township Treasurer Sheila Coats can move forward.
Some of the allegations why she should be removed from office include
failure to transfer township information that is in her computer to the
township's computer, failure to provide reports to the board, and her
handling of accounts.
With the commission determining the reasons for recall listed on the
petition that was filed by Pat Krumenake is clear and understandable, it is
now up to Coats to file an appeal or not.
Coats has until 4 p.m., Monday, to file an appeal in Sanilac County Circuit
Court.
If an appeal is filed, circuit court has 40 days to schedule a hearing to
make a determination on the issue.
If there is no appeal filed on Monday, then petitions can be circulated to
begin gathering the necessary 159 signatures of registered voters in the
township to take the recall to a vote.
The wording on the recall petition is good for 180 days to gather
signatures.
The signatures on the proposed recall are good for 60 days once signatures
start to be gathered.
If the court does not agree with the commission's determination, that ends
that recall effort, but another petition with different wording can be
filed.
The Sanilac County's Election Commission includes Probate Judge Gregory
Ross, who is the chair, and the county's Clerk Leslie Hilgendorf, and
Treasurer Trudy Bowers.
They only determine if the wording is clear and factual. They do not
determine if the accusations for the recall are true or not.
