The tax bill for Lapeer County residents will be somewhat lower following action by commissioners during the last meeting.
The motion to set the tax rate lower than the maximum allowable millage rate was initially voted down when concerns were raised that doing that would negatively impact the special millages like the medical care, veterans, seniors, and etc.
The meeting was paused briefly while that concern was researched.
It was determined that taking such action would only impact the county's general operating millage rate.
It was also noted the county's tax base has increased due to several new businesses opening over the last year or will be opening soon.
After it was determined that setting a lower millage rate would not impact special voted millages, commissioners approved lowering the general fund millage rate from 3.5486 mills to 3.4871 mills.
Historically during the county's annual Truth in Taxation public hearing, the board would set the millage rate at the maximum.
The decision to lower the tax rate was made during the county's annual Truth in Taxation hearing.
