Emergency crews in Vassar safely rescued two people who became stranded while tubing on the Cass River following severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening.

According to the Vassar Fire Department, the pair lost their bearings as darkness set in and storm conditions intensified, leaving them unable to identify their location. Dispatchers obtained GPS coordinates from the callers' cell phone, allowing firefighters to narrow the search area and locate them along the river.

The tubers were brought safely to shore without injury.

Officials say the incident underscores the risks of being on area waterways during rapidly changing weather, where lightning, strong winds, and limited visibility can quickly create hazardous conditions. The fire department encourages anyone planning to spend time on the water to monitor forecasts, keep a charged cell phone available, and have an emergency exit plan in place.
