A payroll dispute involving a group of county sheriff's sergeants remains unresolved months after employees reported receiving unexpected over-payments tied to retroactive contract wages.
According to information provided by Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, sergeants first noticed unusually large paychecks issued in early May and immediately contacted the county clerk's office to question the payments. Employees were reportedly informed that retroactive contract pay had been included, despite the labor agreement not yet being formally finalized.
Days later, county officials determined that the retroactive pay had been incorrectly calculated, resulting in over-payments to members of the sergeants unit. The Sheriff's Office says employees acknowledged the mistake and requested documentation showing the amount owed, with some offering to repay any overpaid funds in a single payment.
The dispute escalated after deductions began appearing in subsequent paychecks before employees received a finalized accounting of the amounts allegedly owed. Sergeants contend that repayment figures have remained unclear and that discrepancies between employees have not been fully explained.
Sheriff Hanson emphasizes that the sergeants themselves alerted county officials to the issue and deny any suggestion that employees attempted to benefit from the error. They say the concern is not the obligation to repay any verified over-payment, but rather the method used to calculate and recover the funds.
A formal grievance has since been filed. Sheriff Hanson says efforts are underway to resolve the matter, including a planned meeting involving county officials, the clerk's office, and representatives of the county's auditing firm later this month. He added that the Sheriff's Department recognizes that mistakes can happen and that its focus is on reaching a fair and transparent resolution, with all parties working from the same information and ultimately getting everyone on the same page.
