During the last Fremont Township meeting, Treasurer Candi Franzel reported she had talked with other township treasurers and they met with a vendor to get more specifics about accepting the use of credit cards to pay township bills.
Franzel learned that going though certain vendors there would be no cost to the township for that service and that method of payment could be added to the township's website so residents could pay their property taxes online or other items such as permits, cemetery lots, etc.
The board approved allowing the treasurer to setup and account to be able to accept credit card payments.
In other financial matters, Franzel reported she was informed the Mayville State Bank will be merging with the Tri-County Bank.
She reached out to those banks and was told that once the merger took place they would match the 2.5 percent interest rate the township was currently receiving on investments.
However, the specific date for the merger has not been set.
After learning that, the board decided to stay with the Mayville State Bank at this time and to see how things go once the merger happens.
The merger will end Mayville's claim to fame as the only independently owned and operated bank in Tuscola County and possibly the Thumb area.
