April is recognized nationwide as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, marking 25 years of coordinated efforts to address sexual violence. The 2026 theme, "25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward," highlights both the progress made and the work still ahead in preventing abuse, supporting survivors, and strengthening communities.
Organizers say the observance is a time to reflect on the contributions of survivors and advocates who have pushed for change, while also encouraging continued education and action. Sexual violence includes a wide range of non-consensual behaviors, from assault and harassment to exploitation and unwanted contact.
Recent research shows the majority of victims know the person responsible, and significant portions of both women and men report experiencing some form of sexual violence in their lifetimes. Data also indicates higher rates among certain populations, including women of color, Indigenous communities, individuals with disabilities, and transgender people.
Throughout April, advocacy groups are promoting awareness campaigns, educational resources, and community engagement opportunities aimed at prevention and support. Officials emphasize that building safer environments requires collective effort, with a focus on respect, accountability, and access to resources.
The month serves as both a milestone and a call to action - reminding communities that while progress has been made over the past 25 years, continued awareness and involvement remain essential to ending sexual violence.
