LANSING - The Michigan Department of State is recognizing April as Donate Life Month, encouraging residents to consider joining the state's organ donor registry.
Officials say thousands of people in Michigan and across the country are currently waiting for life-saving transplants. State leaders are urging residents to register, noting that a single organ donor can save up to eight lives, while tissue donation can help dozens more.
The Michigan Organ Donor Registry allows individuals to document their decision to become donors. Registration can be completed online, at Secretary of State offices, self-service stations, or even through state tax forms.
Health officials report that more than 214,000 people joined the registry in 2025 alone. Still, the need remains urgent, with an estimated 13 people dying each day nationwide while waiting for a transplant.
Gift of Life Michigan, the state's organ and tissue recovery program, says more than 2,700 people in Michigan are currently awaiting transplants. The organization credits continued state partnerships with helping expand access to donor registration.
Officials emphasize that anyone can sign up, regardless of age or health, and recommend discussing the decision with family members.
