U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) played a key role in the Senate's passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 Defense Appropriations Act, a bipartisan bill supporting servicemembers, Michigan’s military installations, and national defense initiatives.
The legislation includes $27.3 million for Exercise Northern Strike at Michigan's Camp Grayling, $42.8 million for PFAS cleanup in Grayling, and $135 million nationwide for environmental remediation at military facilities. It also funds Congressionally Directed Medical Research, military pay raises, child care programs, suicide prevention initiatives, and sexual assault support for servicemembers.
Peters secured investments to strengthen Michigan's defense economy, including funding for STEM education, cybersecurity workforce programs, advanced manufacturing centers, autonomous vehicle research, and naval and shipbuilding projects. The bill also supports National Guard youth programs, small business defense contracting, and defense technology development in Michigan.
On the international front, the bill bolsters partnerships with allies, including Israel, Taiwan, Europe, and Indo-Pacific nations, while funding humanitarian demining programs and counter-tunnel technology.
"Michigan's military installations and defense sector are critical to national security," Peters said, emphasizing the bill's focus on innovation, workforce development, and environmental safety.
