Bay City leaders are exploring new options to protect vulnerable residents during extreme winter weather. Commissioner Benjamin Tenney plans to introduce a resolution at the February 9th city commission meeting that would activate public daytime warming spaces when temperatures drop into the single digits or when more than five inches of snow falls in a day.
Tenney said the plan would build on existing cold-weather protocols and could take cues from Lansing's Code Blue system. Possible options include opening community centers, using city-owned buildings, or coordinating with local groups that offer daytime shelter during severe weather events.
The idea stems from Tenney's concern about past tragedies involving residents exposed to dangerous cold. If approved, the resolution would give city staff 30 days to draft an actionable plan, with any necessary budget adjustments presented to commissioners within the same timeframe.
