Michigan hunters and trappers will soon be able to pursue coyotes at any time of year under a new regulation approved by the state's Natural Resources Commission. The unanimous decision, which takes effect March 1st, removes the former seasonal pause that prohibited coyote hunting from mid-April through mid-July.
The commission's move restores a year-round season first implemented in 2016 but later scaled back. Supporters of the change, including several Republican lawmakers, argued that seasonal restrictions lacked scientific justification and contributed to rising coyote numbers across the state, creating challenges for farmers and property owners.
Coyotes inhabit all 83 Michigan counties, and wildlife experts note that a single female can produce more than 100 pups over her lifetime.
