Gagetown, MI - The Elmwood Township Fire Department has officially been recognized as a Medical First Response (MFR) Non-Transporting Prehospital Life Support Agency, marking a major advancement in emergency services for the communities of Elmwood Township, the Village of Gagetown, and Grant Township.
The designation, announced January 16, 2026, follows a rigorous approval process led by Captain Andrew Booms. The department successfully completed all required inspections and received authorization from both the Saginaw-Tuscola Medical Control Authority and Huron County's Medical Director.
Starting February 1, Elmwood Township firefighters will respond to life-threatening medical emergencies across their coverage areas in Tuscola and Huron counties. In rural regions where ambulance availability can be limited, this new capability allows trained fire personnel to deliver critical care while awaiting transport.
"This wouldn't be possible without the dedication of all of our firefighters," said Fire Chief Trace Lopez. "Our fire family takes great pride in caring for you and your family in your time of need."
The department currently includes:
- 2 Paramedics
- 2 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
- 8 Medical First Responders (MFRs)
These professionals are equipped to handle cardiac events, respiratory distress, traumatic injuries, and other urgent medical situations.
Chief Lopez also praised Captain Booms for his leadership: "I would like to personally thank Captain Andrew Booms for all of his hard work and dedication in helping our agency complete this milestone. It is remarkable."
The department expressed gratitude to the community for its continued support and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding services and enhancing emergency response capabilities.
